I’m Lance Goodman. Also known as Benny Goodman. I’ve been, at various times, a helicopter mechanic in the Fleet Air Arm, nurse, university lecturer, writer, musician and enthusiastic motorcyclist.

I spent much of my working life in nursing and education, eventually teaching at university and writing and publishing about nursing, healthcare and society. Sociology has remained one of the ways I try to understand why people, and the institutions they create, behave as they do.

Alongside that I’ve always written: academic work, politics, social commentary, travel, humour and, increasingly, whatever happens to interest or irritate me.

Music has been there for much longer. I’ve written songs alone and with other musicians, played and recorded with friends, and accumulated songs across several decades. New recording and production technologies have recently allowed me to revisit some of that material and produce songs that previously existed only as demos, old recordings or ideas.

Motorcycles and travel occupy another sizeable part of my life, particularly journeys around Britain and Europe.

This site isn’t intended to turn any of that into a brand. It’s simply somewhere to collect the things I’ve written, recorded and made, and to leave them somewhere other than on old hard drives.
